My motivation for life and everything I do stems from the verse that is found in Matthew 25:40
40 “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’ NLT
What wouldn’t I do for Him? Better yet, how exciting and fulfilling is it to serve someone who sees absolutely EVERY effort you make and blesses you for it? So then does it matter whether or not you are appreciated, or if you see lasting fruit in the lives of those whom you have helped?
I have heard of people who are hesitant to serve the homeless or those in need because they are concerned that they will only be taken advantage of. There is a risk that you will be used, and of course a level of discernment needs to be applied. However, when your ambition is to love and to help someone even if they are blind to see the opportunity, Jesus will be pleased with you.
I even apply this verse to serving my family. Sometimes it seems that your family has not noticed that you just spent hours cleaning up after them and doing their laundry, and within 5 minutes of walking into the house they undo all of your work. In those moments, I categorize them as “one of the least of these.” (smile) I say that tongue in cheek; however, that is how I find peace and love in the middle of a frustrating situation. The truth is, when I serve my family well, I serve my father well, and He sees this and is pleased with me.
There is great joy in living with this motivation.
